  Gaza Music School
Twenty-five new students have been selected out of 105 applicants for the 2009-2010 academic year, a three-fold increase on last year. An open day was organised with students playing a number of pieces to a small public audience.
Architectural Drawings Finalised
After months of careful study and modification, the architectural drawings for the Foundation's new building in Ramallah were finalised.
Nader Wahbdeh returns to QCERD
It is with immense pride that we announce the return to Palestine of our colleague Dr. Nader Wahbeh, armed with a PhD in Philosophy in Secondary and Continuing Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Nader has rejoined QCERD as a senior researcher with a special focus on science in education.
Deloitte Touche Appointed
As part of the implementation process of the Foundation's five-year strategic plan, Deloitte Touche (Palestine) has been appointed to provide consultation services on developing its new policies and procedures as well as its internal management structure.

Jerusalem – A Child's Identity
As part of the initiative “Jerusalem Cultural Capital of the Arab World”, the Centre organised a wide-ranging programme of over 412 activities in the arts and crafts, music, library and IT services which involved 28,555 children during the summer holiday. The initiative included a concert led by Ziad Qasabaghli, as part of QCC's Summer Musical Days and culminated with an exhibition of all the works produced by participating children, including a special dance and choral performance. The summer also saw attendance numbers to the library rise to 29,893, with the number of borrowed books reaching 49,969!
In Memoriam: Mahmoud Darwish
To mark the passing of a year since the death of poet Mahmoud Darwish, an evening of poetry readings was held at QCC, introduced by Khaled Jumaa and singer Youssef Abu Dahi who performed some of Darwish's poems set to music.
Training Workshops for Members of the Librarians Club
Twenty-one participants benefited from two separate workshops for librarians. The first focused on digital library management and the second on the writing of funding applications and proposals.

Extended Services Programme Organises Culture Weeks in Number of Areas

The Extended Services Programme organised six separate cultural weeks with institutions in the Central and Southern Governorates of the Gaza Strip. These included book fairs, theatre and puppetry shows, concerts and face painting. Approximately 600 children of all ages took part.

The summer witnessed a variety of musical events supported by the Programme, ranging from Portuguese Fado concerts in Haifa and Nazareth (with Beit al-mussiqa), ITAR's annual concert in Ramleh and a concert/film series by fj2d String Orchestra organised by Al-Kamandjati Association between August 6 and 16 in the West Bank towns of Hebron, Jenin, Sabastia, Bethlehem, Nablus, Athahiriyya and at the Foundation in Ramallah. A number of musicians' residencies overseas were also supported including Qanun player Wafa Zaghal (Jerusalem) and Nai player Ayham Jalal to the Arabic Music Retreat in the Arab-American Arts Camp (USA) and Nai Barghouti to the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp in Michigan.

PERFORMING ARTS

A number of dance, music and folklore festivals were supported during the period, including the Palestine International Festival 2009 (Ramallah, Bethlehem and Nablus), the Culture and Folklore Festival in Birzeit, the Jerusalem Festival and the 6 th Saffa Culture and Arts Festival at the Hanthala Centre in Saffa village.

Al-Hara Theatre's participation in the Monastir International University Theatre Festival (Tunisia) was also supported. In Huwwara village near Nablus, a number of literary and theatrical talks were held at the Ateeq Cultural Centre.

The highlight of the summer however was the Fourth Performing Arts Summer School organised with Les Ballets C de la B and the Royal Flemish Theatre. Nine participants (from the West Bank and the 1948 areas – Gaza applications could not participate because of the continuing Israeli siege) took part. The school was supervised by Hildegard De Vuyst, Rosalba Torres Guerrero and Koen Augustignen. It culminated with the production of the play In the Park.
CIRCUS ARTS AND COMEDY
As a result of a number of training workshops organised by the Palestine Circus School, several shows were performed in Nablus, Jericho, Jenin, Hebron, Bethlehem and Ramallah. Gaza-Ramallah What?, a comedy show produced by the Association for Developing Theatre and Drama, toured Doura, Aida Refugee Camp, Farkha village, Hebron, Tulkarem and Nablus.
LITERATURE
In Gaza, a week of events celebrating the work of deceased writer Ala'a Katibeh, included a play, an exhibition, a short film screening, a poetry reading and a concert.
VISUAL ARTS
A new visual arts residency programme has been established between the Programme and Delfina Foundation in the UK. The selection process for this residency in London is currently underway.
TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

A video and animation workshop, entitled Kino Camp was held in Qalqilya with support from the Programme. The workshop was hosted by Qalqilya Cultural Forum and organised by Artists Against the Wall (Belgium). Also supported were the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music's Summer Camps in Toubas, Joret Ashamaa', Nablus, Jericho, Jerusalem Old City, and Shufat, Jalazon and Azza Refugee Camps.

  2D Animation and Puppetry Workshops
Under the supervision of Jan Caspers, Gary Rosborough and Kifah Fanni, the Centre organised a one-week workshop for secondary school girls on producing animated films using putty models. In August, the Centre organised two one-day introductory workshops on the making and animation of puppets. The first workshop included over 120 children from Silwad, the second numerous students from various classed in Jiljlya Mixed School.
The Third Drama in Education Summer School
For the third year running, the Centre organised a two-week intensive summer school on the use of drama in an educational context. As in previous years, this took place in the Jerash area of Jordan and included seventy students (chosen from more than 130 applicants) from Palestine, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Syria. Graduates of the first school will qualify for their diplomas once they complete the practical requirements of the course.

Family Albums in the Teaching of History

The writer and researcher Issam Nassar gave a one-day seminar to a number of teachers and researchers on family albums as a historical source, exploring the place and importance of the image in the understanding and teaching of history, particularly as a source of socio-personal information in the absence of written archives.
Numerous Working Meetings with Teachers

Twelve teachers from a number of different schools in the Ramallah area took part in an introductory meeting on the alternative resources available to them in the teaching of science in the classroom, in particular, the use of interactive experiments, mimesis and films. In Gaza, eight further meetings covered a wide range of subjects including the use of photography in teaching, linking everyday problems with mathematics and the challenges of teaching freedom and its different meanings. More than 84 teachers took part in these meetings. A further 221 also participated in the Gaza Summer courses, which again covered a wide range of subjects of immediate interest to the teaching profession.

Dealing with Children in Shock

In collaboration wit the Qattan Centre for the Child, four researchers from the Centre in Gaza worked with teachers on various techniques designed to help children of nursery and pre-prep age who are in shock or suffering from trauma, including using art, dance and playing with sand.
