Opening of The Foundation’s New London Premises |
| |
 |
| |
On 30th October, the Foundation celebrated the opening of its permanent new premises in London. These contain the offices of the Board of Trustees as well as the Mosaic Rooms, an exhibition and entertainment space to host different cultural activities. The opening was inaugurated with Occupied Space 2008, an art exhibition including over 100 works organized in collaboration with and in support of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) in Britain. |

| Announcement of prizes for the Culture and Arts Programme |

The Culture and Arts Programme (CAP) announced the winners of both the Young Artist of the Year 2008 and the Young Writer of the Year 2008 awards (short story and poetry category). It also announced the winners of the Ismail Shamout Prize and the Qattan Distinction Award for Distinguished Cultural Work. The announcements were made during the final ceremony of CAP held at Al-Kasbah Theatre in Ramallah on 24 th October which included piano performances by Fadi Deeb and Nizar Al Khater; a qanoun performance by Suhail Nassar and a solo theatrical interlude by Adham Na'aman.

| Partnership with “Arts Alliance Productions” on “Identity of the Soul” Palestine Tour |
| The Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding with British company Arts Alliance Productions, specialising in cinematic and art production, to collaborate in implementing a tour, of its multimedia performance “Identity of the Soul,” across eight Palestinian cities. The Foundation's role comprised logistical support, accounting facilitation and coordination between partners and local service providers. |

| Classics of European Cinema in Arabic ends |

| |
September 30 th marked the end of the Classics of European Cinema in Arabic. During the project's 9 month span, a translation unit using the FAB system was established, and three technicians were trained on its use in collaboration with Sama Productions. In addition, the rights of 15 classic European films were obtained; the films were translated and distributed for non-commercial screenings to the 47 school cine-clubs established by the Foundation and to members of Shabaka.

| Foreign delegations visit the Foundation |
| The Foundation welcomed a number of foreign delegations to its Ramallah offices, briefing them on the cultural situation in Palestine with a view to fostering joint collaboration. Delegates included:
- Harry Putker, Dutch First Secretary, accompanied by Andre Vaughan and Henriette van Gulik from the Dutch Foreign Ministry.
- Jean-Paul Ghoneim and Valerie Foques from the French Consulate
- Brendan McSharry, Kate Owen and Suha Al Khuffash from the British Council
- Ulf Sarner from the Drama and Music School at Gotenberg University in Sweden

| Signing an agreement with the Belgian Cooperation |
| The Foundation signed an agreement with the Belgian Cooperation through which the latter will contribute to the costs of a specialised training workshop on musical instrument maintenance. The workshops are to be run by Musik Fund in Gaza City and Nablus. |

| 32 children join Gaza Music School |
| |

| |
The Gaza Music School opened its doors on 5 th October and 32 children joined to learn one of five musical instruments under the supervision of local teachers. |

| A new auditor appointed |
| Following the decision to improve accountability and transparency by rotating auditors, the Foundation appointed Sa'adi, Urfali and Dahir Pricewaterhouse Coopers as the Foundation's new auditors starting in the current fiscal year 2008-2009. |

Participation in the Arab Foundations Forum meeting, Beirut |
| The Foundation's Executive Director, Ziad Khalaf, participated in the Arab Foundations Forum meeting held in Beirut on 18 th September. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and adopt the Forum's internal bye-laws, policies and management procedures. |

Reem Abu Jaber resumes duties |
| Following a year's sabbatical and training leave, Reem Abu Jaber, Director of the Qattan Centre for the Child, resumed her duties in early September. |

| Annual Report 2007-2008 |

The Foundation published its 2007-2008 Annual Report with details of its achievements and projects over the year. The report focussed on our work in the Gaza Strip in the shadow of the ongoing Israeli siege. |

| “Rua: FromNakba to Resistance – a History” |
| |
 |
| |
The Qattan Centre for Educational Research and Development recently published Issue 27 of its educational periodical, Rua Tarbawiyya . It featured a history of the period from the Nakba to the birth of the Palestinian resistance movement in 17 articles covering themes such as re-reading history, formation of identity, resistance and political culture, in addition to reports and pictures of the Centre's activities during the busy summer of 2008. |

| New publication: Principles of Knowledge in Problem Solving |

The Centre recently published a booklet entitled “A Reading on the Principles of Knowledge in Problem-solving in Education: A research project in Critical Thinking” by Wael Kishek. The book contains a critical reading of Aristotle's Logic and Newtonian epistimology which dominate the field of problem-solving in the context of education. |

Launch of Autumn Activities |

The Qattan Centre for the Child (QCC) launched its Autumn programme of activities at the beginning of September, under the title “The Seas…the Mysteries of the Deep”. This will continue until the end of November. Activities will consist of a number of events and courses related to marine life and the wondrous creatures hidden in the depths of the seas, using a number of various technologies.
The Information Technology Unit continued running its training courses. In the library, 5,351 external loans were recorded throughout September and October and 8,710 materials were used on-site by visitors. The number of members of the Centre, both parents and children, reached 11,738 by the end of October. |

QCC celebrates its 3rd anniversary |

Hundreds of children took part in the activities during an open day commemorating three years since the Centre began its work. Activities varied between free-style painting, face painting, puppet shows, role-playing and clown shows. During the celebrations, the contribution of actively participating children and parents was acknowledged.

| Training programme on eliminating illiteracy and promoting family literacy |

The Centre organised a training programme for its employees on eliminating illiteracy and on the advancement of family literacy under the supervision of Reem Abu Jaber. The programme aims to consolidate employees' skills in improving family literacy and influencing family culture to achieve this goal.

| Meeting with parents and children to evaluate QCC's services |

The Centre convened several meetings during which children and parents had the opportunity to discuss and evaluate the Centre's current services. Participants' views and suggestions were recorded for future reference.

| Launch of the Qattan Parents' Club |
| |
 |
| |
In October, the Centre established the Qattan Parents' Club, aimed at drawing in parents' views and suggestions with regard to the Centre's services. During the first meeting, Reem Abu Jaber presented a training programme on family literacy and the role of parents in influencing children's literacy levels. The club's action plan will be announced in due course and, as indicated at the first meeting, there will be the opportunity for parents to participate in providing activities for the children.

| The Extended Service Programme: 6,800 beneficiaries |

The Extended Service Programme continued its activities in the central and northern areas of the Gaza Strip. 6,800 children from 14 different institutions in the Strip benefitted from the activities, which comprised book displays, art activities and film screenings, in addition to the loan of 3,000 items of library materials to children's libraries run by several different organisations.

The Programme supported the staging of the play “An Autumn Tale” at Al-Kasabah Theatre on 25 th October. It was produced by Al-Midan Theatre in Haifa, directed by Nizar Al-Zoubi and starred Makram Khouri, Salim Daw and Salwa Naqara. The Programme also supported four performances of the children's play “Layla” by Al-Fawanis Theatre Group at the Said Mishal Foundation for Culture and Education in Gaza between 1 st – 6 th September, and four performances of the theatrical work “Adnan and Lina – The Accursed Land”, presented by the artists Imad Miziro and Adnan Abu Samina in various parts of the West Bank. Additionally, there were eight performances of the play “Wheat Grain” presented by the artist Nidal Al-Khatib of the Tantura Puppet Theatre Company.

| “What if”: a new CD by Ramzi Abu Radwan |

| Young Artist of the Year Award 2008 |

| |
The Programme organised the opening of the Young Artist of the Year Award 2008 at the Foundation's headquarters in Ramallah on 15 th October. It also organised a tour of the various places where competing works were exhibited, namely the International Academy of Arts, the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre, the old Ramallah Municipality building and the Mahata Gallery, in addition to the Foundation. These exhibitons continued until 30 th October.

| Exhibitions by John Berger and Marc Trivier to mark the 40 th day of mourning for Mahmoud Darwish |
| The programme organised an exhibition of works by artists John Berger and Yves Berger and photographer Marc Trivier on 15 th September. This was part of an evening organised by the Foundation to commemorate the 40 th day of mourning for the late poet Mahmoud Darwish. The programme also organised, in collaboration with the Qattan Centre for the Child in Gaza, a workshop run by Yves Berger and Mark Trivier for a group of artists in the Gaza Strip. |

| Visiting Delegations |

In collaboration with Oxfam Belgium, the Programme organised a meeting on 15 th September between Belgian academic and cultural figures and representatives of Palestinian civil organisations working in the cultural field. The visiting delegation learned about the cultural situation in Palestine and discussed opportunities for mutual cooperation. The Programme also organised, in collaboration with the Franco–German Cultural Centre, a meeting on 24 th September with French artist Ernest Pignon–Ernest about his work. During the meeting, a documentary film on Pignon-Ernest's research on Jean Genet was screened. The Programme also organised, in collaboration with the International Academy of Arts, a lecture by the Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto (who was also a member of the Young Artist of the Year 2008 Jury) on 25 th October at the Friends Boys School in Ramallah during which the artist spoke about his work. |

| Artists at the Guest House |

The Foundation hosted Sari Zananiri, an Australian of Palestinian descent, at its Guest House between 1 st September and 8 th October where he ran a workshop with students at the International Academy of Arts. The Guest House also hosted Orlian Lambert, Juan Masijur, Michael Bustamante, and Ramzi Makdisi, all of whom are students at the Centre for Cinema Studies in Barcelona and were working on shooting a film entitled “A Year for Loss”, produced by Makdisi. The Foundation also hosted the theatre producer Chris Cooper between 25 th and 30 th October, during which he ran a workshop on “Imagination at Work” at QCERD. |

Workshop in Jenin as part of the Integrated Learning Project |
| On 11 th October, the Centre ran a workshop in Jenin as part of the Integrated Learning Project. Conducted by Wael Kishek and Mashour Al Batran, fifteen teachers took part.
During the workshop, the nature, aims and anticipated results were clarified as were the roles of the researchers and teachers taking part. A research paper on the concept of integration in education was presented. |

| A meeting for the project “Teaching Starts from Life” |
As part of the project “Teaching Starts from Life”, the Centre held a meeting on 18 th October which involved the two supervisors of the project, Dua Jaber and Wael Kishek, as well as five teachers. The meeting consisted of a presentation of the first stage of the project as implemented by participants at their schools

Establishment of the “Education for All” Forum |
| The Centre initiated a forum to bring together teachers working with special educational needs students, under the supervision Nay Shawmar. The forum aims to provide a framework for these teachers in order to improve teaching methods, to access more special needs students and to raise awareness of the particular demands associated with catering for the needs of all ability levels in one class.. This is to be achieved through exchange of experiences and by discussing new methods in the light of the results generated through classroom experiments. |

| The “Qaddumi – Qattan” Grant Awarded |
 |
Fadl Al Sawayfe joined the Institute of Education at London University to work on his higher degree in Comparative Education as part of the Qaddumi - Qattan Grant for the 2008-2009 academic year.

| “Theatre in Education” under the supervision of Chris Cooper |

The Centre organised a programme from 26 th - 30 th October entitled “Theatre in Education: Concepts, Trends, Methods” under the supervision of the English playwright Chris Cooper with the participation of 31 actors and teachers. The project utilises the production of theatrical works by professional actors/teachers for application within teaching contexts.

| 10 teachers' forums in Gaza |
The Centre organised 10 teachers' forums in Gaza. The first involved the artist Aya Abd Al Rahman who was invited to talk about the use of art in teaching the English language as well as the use of Photoshop. Other forums included:

| Workshops on various educational issues |
 |
The Gaza Centre organised a number of workshops in which teachers took part. These included:
- Producing models of thinking for teachers
- Preparation of training lessons about the culture of knowledge
- Analysing the content of aspects of mathematics text books for the 6 th grade
- Preparing an Arabic lesson plan about skills of creative thinking
- Preparing enrichment activities in the science curriculum about scientific culture
