Partnership with Ford Foundation to Develop Performing Arts |
In the framework of its strategic decision to increase its intervention in the field of performing arts in Palestine, the Culture & Arts Programme has developed a partnership with the regional office of the Ford Foundation in Cairo, in which both foundations will provide new grants towards production, documentation and training in the field. |

| Qaddumi & Qattan Offer Scholarships for Teachers |
| The Hani Qaddumi Foundation and A. M. Qattan Foundation have launched a new joint scholarship scheme for Palestinian school teachers who wish to obtain Masters Degrees in specific subjects abroad and then return to work in their profession as well as engage in research projects within the Qattan Centre for Education Research & Development (QCERD). |

Partnership with SIDA on Music Project in Gaza |
Preparations are under way for the launch of an experimental project in music teaching in Gaza in partnership between the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) through the Qattan Centre for the Child in Gaza. The project aims to establish a sustainable programme in teaching music in Gaza, with institutions of related interests, such as the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music. |

| Speech & the Liberation of Meaning - Textual & Dramatic Approaches to the Play The Elephant, O King of All Time |

QCERD has recently released the book Speech & The Liberation of Meaning Textual & Dramatic Approaches to the Play The Elephant, O' King of All Time by Wasim Kurdi. The book includes a reading of the Saadallah Wannous play, which is included in the fifth unit of the Arabic Language textbook for the twelfth grade in the Palestinian curriculum. In the book, it also suggests approaching it with the utilization of drama as a context of exploration and expression. The publication targets Arabic language teachers in higher primary levels, including teachers of the twelfth grade and teachers of other subjects, especially teachers of social sciences, contemporary studies and drama. A meeting will therefore be organized to discuss the book with the teachers in addition to distributing it to the teachers who partake in the drama and expression workshops that take place at the Centre. |

| The Culture and Arts Programme will soon publish the Young Artist of the Year Award 2006 Catalogue “Transformations”, which includes works of the ten finalists of the award in addition to a number of articles by Nicola Gray, Mahmoud Abu Hashhash, Omar Al Qattan, and Esmail Nashif. |

| The activities of the winter programme “Your Body…Secrets & Hidden Facts” carried on throughout the period, introducing children to the different body organs and their functions. This programme's activities coincided with the winter break, during which the Centre organized a number of art and computer courses and various activities, for thousands of children from various age groups and parents. The number of visitors to the Centre in the past two months reached 9366, where 26,111 books were read in the Centre and the number of loans was recorded at 20,010. The number of new or renewed memberships until end of February reached 9362 members. |

| Creative Weaving |

| During a course entitled Painting with Strings, the supervisor Samar Al-Banna trained 16 children from 1 st to 3 rd grade on how to weave with a loom. The children weaved a number of art pieces. And in a course titled “My Wool's Fur”, 17 children between the 4 th to 9 th grades, made a number of wool scarves, under the supervision of Ayreena Naji. |

Making Sweets in the Course “Sugar…Sugar” |
 |
The course “Sugar…Sugar”, which was supervised by trainer Aida Ashour, included providing the children with important information regarding food and nutrition, through the making of simple sweets. 22 children participated in the course between the 1 st to 3 rd grades. |

| “Water Colors”: Training to Draw World Paintings |
 |
| 12 children participated in the course “Water Colors” between the 7 th to 9 th grades. The trainer helped the participants to draw a number of world famous paintings through the use of watercolors. |

“My Song”: Introducing the Human Body through Song |
| The course “My Song”, which was supervised by Waleed Abu Jiyab included introducing the children to the human body through the use of songs. Eight children of preparatory age took part in it. |

| Creative Writing in “My Story” & “Cut & Paste” |
 |
| The aim of the course “My Story” that was supervised by Sana' Al-Byari was to develop the creative abilities and artistic skills of the participants, who wrote and illustrated a group of stories. 16 children between 4 th to 6 th grades took part in it. As for the course “Cut & Paste”, which was supervised by Hana' Al-Tabaa', it aimed to develop the organizational skills of participants by teaching them how to arrange their papers and personal tools. 11 children participated in the course between the 1 st and 3 rd grades. |

| “Checkmate” to develop Creative Thinking |
 |
In the aim of developing the creative thinking abilities of children through teaching them chess, the trainer Salah Ashour ran “Checkmate” in which 12 children between the 7 th and 9 th grades participated. |

| Art Activities with Participation of Children & Parents |
| A wide variety of other art activities took place during the period in entertainment, music, and cinema. A total of nine different activities included 1095 parents and children and from different age groups. |

| 12 children between the 7 th and 9 th grades participated were taught how to design short films with sound, image and animation using Flash. |

| Web Page Design and Drawings |

| In the “Frontpage” course, 12 children between 6 th and 9 th grades were taught the basics of designing web pages using “Frontpage” and then uploading them on the Internet. As for the “Photoshop” course for beginners, it tackled how to design drawings, collate images, and execute basic designs using the programme. 21 children between 6 th to 9 th grades participated in this course. |

Learning the Basics of Windows |

| “Windows & Word” helped 11 children between 3rd and 6th grades to get to know the basics of the Windows operating system, typing and arranging texts. As for the “Visual Basic” course, it tackled the principles and skills of programming using the Visual Basic language, and nine children between 6th and 9th grades participated in this course. |

| Workshop on use of “Bluetooth” |
25 children from various ages participated in the workshop around the use of “Bluetooth”. |

| Training Course for Librarians on Use of “WinISIS” Programme |
 |
In coordination with the Ministry of Education, the Centre organized a course on the use of WinISIS programme to computerize libraries. 13 school librarians from the Gaza governorate participated in it. The course dealt with the use of many of the applications of the programme and a copy of the programme was distributed to the participating librarians in the training course, with the aim of generalizing the use of the programme in school libraries. |

Library Activities |
| “Play & Discover”… & “Behaviors” |
The library organized a number of activities such as “Play & Discover”, supervised by Manar Al-Azayzah, where 26 participating children under the age of six were introduced to the human body. In the activity “Behaviors”, under the supervision of the trainer Raghda Al-Jbour, the participants were taught how to adopt healthy habits where 27 children between 1 st and 3 rd grades participated in this activity. |

| Meetings with a Specialist Concerning the Body |
| Four meetings were arranged with Dr. Allam Nayef in the aim to provide children with information about the human body, its organs and their functions. The number of participants reached 68 children between fourth and sixth grades. |

| “Your Body Under the Microscope” & “Your Health is the World” |
 |
| In the activity “Your Body under the Microscope”, supervised by Dr. Allam Nayef, the participants were introduced with information about the body and the functions of the organs in the human body. Around 53 children between 7 th and 9 th grades participated in the activity. As for the activity “Your Health is the World”, the trainer Mohammed Al-Bata arranged for four meetings, which dealt with the special issue of public health, and where 79 children between 4 th and 6 th grades took part in the activity. |

| “Movement within Movement” & “My Body” |
 |
138 children under the age of six participated in the activity “Movement within Movement” under the supervision of the trainer Wisam Al-Sousi, which proposed exercises to activate the muscles. And in the course “My Body”, children were introduced to the different body parts and the functions of each organ. 314 children from 1 st to 9 th grades participated in this course. |

| Concert by musician Elena Al-Lidawi |
 |
| The Centre hosted a classical music concert by the musician Elena Al-Lidawi which was organized by the French Cultural Centre. The artist Elena played a number of musical compositions on the piano, while a group of students from the Rosary School participated in performing some songs in English and French. |

| Entertainment Show for the Creative Women's Society |
| The Creative Women's Society presented a number of artistic and entertaining activities in the premises of the Centre, which included a performance by Al-Hakawati and another with a clown, in addition to some drawing activities and a talent show. 80 children from all age groups participated in these events. |

| External Lending and School Book Fairs |
 |
As part of our external lending programme, 5150 books were lent to 10 libraries of institutions that provide services for children in various areas of the Gaza Strip. Six book fairs were organized in six schools in various parts of the Gaza Strip. Approximately 6000 children benefited.

Results of the first phase from the Young Artist Award of Year 2008 |
| The Culture & Arts Programme announced the names of the winners of the first phase in the Young Artist Award of Year 2008. The independent jury designated by the Foundation chose 12 projects by 12 artists to participate in the second and final phase of the Award after reviewing and evaluating 62 applications by young artists from all over Palestine and the Occupied Golan Heights. The twelve finalists are: Wafa Yassin (Tamra/Galilee), Salameh Al-Safadi (Golan), Akram Halabi (Golan), Randa Maddah (Golan), Layan Shawabkeh (Ramallah), Shatha Al-Safadi (Golan), Jamil Daraghmeh (Jenin), Majd Abdel Hamid (Ramallah), Jad Salman (Tulkarem), Hazem Harb (Gaza), Diala Maddah (Golan), Hani Amra (Jerusalem).

| “One Soul” Performing in Lebanon |
| Abdel Mine'm Idwan (Gaza/Paris) presented his musical performance “One Soul”, which had received the Performing Arts Grant – Production for year 2007 at Babel Theatre in Beirut on 2 nd of February. |

| “Makan House” New Artistic Exchange Programme |
| A new project by Makan in Amman was announced for the establishment of the “Makan House: Arab Artists Residency & Exchange Programme” in cooperation between the Foundation, Zico House in Beirut, Townhouse Art Gallery in Cairo, Alexandria Contemporary Art Forum and with support from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture. The Programme offers the opportunity for Arab artists who work in contemporary art to travel and take up a residency in cities such as Amman, Beirut, Cairo, Ramallah or Alexandria. |

Art Exhibitions in Ramallah, Jerusalem, Bethlehem & Birzeit |

The Programme cooperated in organizing the exhibition “Reflection” by Jawad Ibrahim throughout February at the Palestinian Art Court – Al-Hoash in Jerusalem, from the 7 th till the 21 st of February. It also supported the exhibition's move to the Peace Center in Bethlehem, where it remained on view till the 9 th of March. The same exhibition had opened at the Ramallah premises of the Foundation on the 6 th of November 2007.
he Programme supported the exhibition “A Memory of a Human” by the photographer Virginia Paradinas on the 26 th of January in the African Community Association in the Old City of Jerusalem. The opening was accompanied by the launch of the African community troupe of young artistic talents “Watar”. |

Nizar Al-Khater receives the Qattan Award in the 9 th Piano Competition in Magnificat |
The Magnificat Institute in Jerusalem organized its 9 th piano competition on the 13 th of December. The Qattan Award for this year was granted to the young pianist Nizar Al-Khater, who played a composition entitled “Peace Upon You from Me”, which was composed by Basel Zayed and arranged by H.A. Vosgueritchian, in addition to winning the award on his performance in the Italian city of Vicenza on the 3 rd of March. It should be mentioned that Nizar has received the Qattan Musical Grant for the past three consecutive years. |

| Support of Plays in Ramallah and different areas in the Gaza Strip |

The Programme supported the Ashghal Company in organizing five performances of the children's play “The Moon is Oval for the People” in the Gaza Strip on the 24 th and 31 st of December and 10 th , 17 th , 18 th of February in Nusseirat, Beit Hanoun, Tal Al Hawa, and Al Shate' Camp. It also supported six performances of the children's play “The Brown Flea” produced by the General Union of Cultural Centers, which was presented in Gaza, Beit Lahia, Al Breij, Jabalia, Al Maghazi, between the 23 rd of February and 1 st of March. The Programme also supported the performance of the play “The Temple Torcher” in Al-Kasaba Theatre (Ramallah) on the 28 th of February, which is written by Gregory Goren, designed and directed by Nizar Zuabi and produced by Al-Meidan Theatre - Haifa. |

Support of Al Kamandjati Project to Teach Music in Jenin |
| The Programme supported the project by Al Kamandjati Association to teach Music in the city of Jenin from April until December 2007. The center there now works with 50 students between ages 8-15 years old, from the city of Jenin, Jenin refugee camp, Toubas and Al Zababdeh. |

| Ala' Hleihel launches a new book in Cairo |
 |
The Programme sponsored the participation of the writer Ala' Hleihel in the launch and signing of his new book “The Father, the Son, and the Lost Spirit”, and the organization of a critical lecture on the 1 st of February in Cairo, as part of the 40 th Cairo International Book Fair. |

Support of Artistic Workshops in Nazareth |
| The Programme supported the visit of the German musician Elena Cheah to give training workshops for the students of Orpheus Association for Music Development in Nazareth between 27/12/2007 until 6/1/2008. |

| Two Korean Writers in the Guesthouse |
 |
The Foundation received two guests in its guesthouse in Ramallah, the writer Ow Su Yon, and the journalist Si Oi Yon from South Korea, in a residency between the 3 rd of December 2007 until the 21 st of February 2008. The two writers worked on their literary and journalistic projects and researched the possibilities of deepening cultural ties between Palestine and South Korea, with the knowledge that Ow Su Yon had started a few years back in presenting the Palestinian and Arab cultural scene in South Korea through hosting a number of writers. |

Training Workshop for Teachers |
| PAV is preparing for the final workshop for teachers who supervise its school cine-clubs. 38 teachers from 35 schools all over the West Bank and the 1948 areas will partake in this seminar. The two-day workshop, to be given by the project's director Omar al-Qattan, is the closing event of the School Film Education Programme, and will include an evaluation of the work of the programme in the schools throughout the past two and half years. |

| “Personal Enquiry” and “The Night” released |
 |
| “Personal Enquiry” by director Ula Tabari has just been released on DVD. The film had been awarded a Distribution and Publication grant by PAV and deals with the life of a Palestinian in the Jewish State. This period also saw the publication on DVD of “The Night” by Syrian director Mohammed Malas, whose events are set in the city of Al-Quneitra in the Occupied Golan Heights. |

| Student Films Released …Soon |
| Final touches are being put on the four films made by students who received production grants from PAV, after the editing phase had been completed under the supervision of the director Michel Khleifi. The four films are expected to be released in subtitled versions on DVD at the beginning of April. |

| Screening of the Two Films “Beware: Comment ahead of you!” & “Dreams of the City” through Shabaka - the Network of Arab Cineclubs |

The film “Beware: Comment Ahead!” by Director Dalia Al-Kouri was screened in January in the centers participating in Shabaka - the Network of Arab Cineclubs in Palestine and Jordan. The film deals with sexual harassment. And as part of the screenings for the month of February, the film “Dreams of the City” by Syrian Director Mohammed Malas was shown. The film is set In Damascus during the turbulent post-war years. |

Winter Courses in Jericho & Ramallah |

| The Centre organized winter training courses for teachers for the year 2007-8 between the 20 th -23 rd of January and with the participation of 200 teachers from various specializations and schools. The courses included six workshops that dealt with different fields of knowledge of which the most important was: “Teaching Maths with Meaning” by researchers Liana Jabr and Wa'il Kishek, “History Narrates the Story of the Individual and Places through Time: Expressing the Self as History” by researchers Nisreen Awwad and Malek Rimawi, “The Social and Psychological in the Educational Context” by researchers Nai Shomar and Wasim Kurdi, “Learning with Multimedia: Animation” by Kifah Fani, “Nurturing Education of Thinking: Thinking Starts from Life” by researcher Du'a Jabr, “Nature of Science & Technologies” by researcher Mashhour Al-Batran, the last being organized at the premises of the Foundation in Ramallah. |

| Winter Courses in Gaza |
| The Centre in Gaza organized winter training courses for 187 teachers from various governmental, UNRWA and private schools. The courses treated the following topics: Analytical Thinking Skills in the Arabic Language Curriculum by Atiyyah Al-Omari, Effective Verbal Reasoning by Maha Barzaq, Mathematics and Social Adaptation by Rahmah Odeh, Conceptual Change Strategies in Science Curriculum presented by our colleague Hayel Al -Kurd, Methods of Inducing Contemplation Among Students by supervisor Ali Sheikh Ali, Creative Writing and Literary Appreciation presented by writer Khaled Jumaa. |

| Course: “Scientific Enquiry: A Major Component in Scientific Education” |

The Centre is preparing for a new annual course entitled “Scientific Enquiry: A Major Component in Scientific Education” administered and implemented by researcher Maha Quran. The course is aimed at Science teachers from the 1 st to 10 th grades and is made up of four phases, starting with the winter course in Ramallah that includes 3 meetings, then the applied course, followed by the summer courses and ending with documenting the research. |

| Course in “Expression Through Narrative” |
| The Centre organized a course in expression for children between ages 12-15 years, under the supervision of Wasim al-Kurdi, Malek al-Rimawi and Kifah Fani. This course focused on the following points: self-expression through developing and writing a story, puppet-making in relation to the visual elements of the story, turning the stories and the related puppets into films through the technique of “animation”. 20 students participated from various schools in Ramallah in this course. |

| “The Story in an Interactive Framework…Narrating, Discovering and Expressing” |
 |
| Under the supervision of Wasim Kurdi, the Centre initiated in implementing a programme “The Story in an Interactive Framework…Narrating, Discovering and Expressing”, which focuses on the skills of narrating stories, discovering its characteristics, structures and morals through engaging a group of kindergarten and 1 st grade teachers from various schools. Two meetings around the programme were convened on the 19 th and 28 th of February in the Friends Girls School. |

| Study Day in Jenin around the book “The Culture of Mathematics” |
| In cooperation with the two teachers' forums of Ya'bad and Jenin, the Centre had organized a study day on the 23 rd of February in the Jenin Girls High School to discuss the book “The Culture of Mathematics: Conceptual Mathematics” by researchers Liana Jabr and Wa'il Kishek. During this study day, 80 teachers participated from the Jenin district in three different sessions. The first session was made up of a series of parallel workshops, which introduced the theoretical foundations of the subjects tackled in the book, carried out by the two authors. The second session included two visual applications related to the book's contents; first by the teacher Niveen Hama and the second by teacher Mohammed Abu Baker. As for the third session, it was made up of five theoretical commentaries and individual impressions by the following teachers: Sa'ad Ateeq, Rashed Abu Issa, Imad Abdel Latif, Ibtihal Al-Orabi, Omar Abu al-Rob. |

Study Day in Gaza Entitled “Schools: Reality & Future Visions” |
| The Centre organized in Gaza on the 19 th of December in the Qattan Child Centre in Gaza a study day entitled “Schools: Reality & Future Visions”, which covered three main points: the school that we want, therapeutic plans to elevate student achievements, the UNRWA school experience, school violence and the culture of difference. 191 teachers, supervisors and directors of schools from elementary and high schools participated in this day. |

| “Micro Projects in Schools” |
 |
Three consecutive meetings for the project “Micro Projects in Schools” convened of which the last was on the 21 st of February under the supervision of our colleagues Huda Hassouneh and Malek Rimawi. A group of school teachers explored the experiences that they had acquired from comparing their own personal experiences with what they have received from the Centre with the aim of building creative and experimental projects in their schools. There are approximately ten projects Involving 15 teachers from various schools in the West Bank. |

| Teachers Forum on “Employing Drama in the Educational Context” Convenes its 2 nd Meeting |
| The second meeting for the founders and participants of the Forum on Employing Drama in the Educational Context was convened on 21/22 of February in the premises of the Red Crescent Society in Al-Bireh, with 24 participating teachers from various areas of the West Bank. During this meeting, the website of the forum was discussed and there was a presentation of the exceptional drama experiences of the teachers with their students, in addition to a brief preparation on the Second Drama Summer School, which will take place between the 4 th and 15 th of August in Ajloun, Jordan.

| Monthly Teacher Forums Continue in Gaza |
| Eight forums were convened in the premises of the Centre in Gaza in which 106 teachers took part. The forums dealt with issues such as how to develop the teacher's performance, problems related to teaching mathematics, the experience of the teacher in employing story-telling while teaching sciences, suitable games to be played in the class helping to achieve a meaningful education, applied research as a vision for development and professional growth, and creative writing skills. |

| Dialogue and Reflection- Discussion Meetings on Various Educational Subjects |
| In the Centre in Gaza six discussion groups for teachers were convened in the fields of Arabic language, English Language, and Mathematics in order to reflect on applied lessons which had been documented on video. |

| “Learning Starts from Life” |
| In the framework of starting and preparing for the project “Learning Starts from Life”, a meeting took place in the premises of the Centre on the 16 th of February which included the supervisors of the project, Du'a Jabr and Wa'il Kishek, in addition to 11 teachers from the following villages: Ithna, Dura and Thahriyeh. |

The Centre in Gaza convened five educational meetings around Scientific Culture with 75 teachers from various schools. |

| Palestine Satellite Channel Interview |
| Palestine TV and Satellite Channel interviewed QCERD Director Wasim Kurdi on the 23 rd of February. An introduction to the work of the Centre was presented and an overview of the activities conducted by it for teachers in the various districts of the country. |

Participating in the “Creative Forum for Independent Theatre Groups” in Alexandria |
| Our colleague Wasim Kurdi participated in the “Creative Forum for Independent Theatre Groups which took place in Alexandria in February, where he gave a workshop entitled “Drama as an Expressive Context: Training and Establishing Directors of School Theatres”. Kurdi also participated in the project “Stories of Alexandria Meeting”, which was organized on the margins of the Forum in the Alexandria Library and the International Foundation for Creativity and Training. |

Two Meetings around Effective Learning and School Violence |
Two educational meetings were convened in the premises of the Centre in Gaza for fifty supervisors and headmasters of schools. The topic of the first meeting was “Effective Learning from Life” and the second dealt with the topic of “School Violence and Authority in the Classroom”. |

Participating in Workshop around Marketing Libraries |
| The Ramallah Centre's Assistant Librarian, Sally Abu Baker, participated in a workshop entitled “Marketing Libraries: New Challenge for Librarians”, supervised by Barbara Leisson, Deputy General Director for the National European Union of Libraries – Office of European Libraries, on 4/2 in the Franco-German Cultural Centre in Ramallah. |

Filming Applied Lesson on Different Subjects |
| In the framework of its work with schools, and in its aim to document the classroom experience, the Research Centre filmed a number of applied lessons in schools around the use of creative writing skills. Classes by teacher Nabeela Hmeid, Suha Mhanna, Hiba Hassan and Samar Al-Ghaff were documented These classroom experiences will be shown to teachers to discuss and analyze them in the aim of learning from them. |

| Visits for School & University Groups & Delegations |
 |
A group of students from Kufr Qasem High School for Girls visited the Centre in Gaza under the supervision of their teacher Iman Bal'ousheh. Dr. Mahmoud Abu Daff, Dean of the Education Department in the Islamic University also made a visit to the Centre, where possibilities of future cooperation with the Centre were discussed in addition to providing him with a presentation of the various work and activities of the Centre. Dr. Abed Al-Atheem Al-Musdar, Dean of the Education Department at Al Azhar University also visited the Centre as a means to discuss future cooperation. |
